On the weekend of January 24th, exhibition two took place at the Marin Headlands Center for the Arts. New furniture pieces made from locally sourced old-growth redwood and a selection of garments hand-dyed in the iron rich soil of Amami Oshima (Japan) were presented together with a collection of artworks curated by Rosa Park of Francis Gallery. The legendary San Francisco bookshop William Stout complemented the space with a selection of new and rare books, while Stuart Bogie set the soundscape with a live performance on the closing evening.
Building upon exhibition one which took place in New York City last year, this iteration brought together multiple collaborators within a historic former army barracks building, converted in the early 1980s by a group of artists – notably David Ireland – into artist residencies, studios, and exhibition spaces. Just 15 minutes north of San Francisco, the Headlands Center for the Arts is located in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which encompasses over 80,000 acres of rolling hills and serene protected landscape.
Titled headlands, the exhibition included works in glass, ceramic, wood, handwoven textile, oil on canvas, garments, books - disregarding the conventionally drawn distinctions between art and craft. The show featured work from Marina Contro, Johnny Ortiz Concha, Masao Kozumi, Thylda Palmese, Nancy Kwon, JAMESPLUMB, Berend Boorsma, Mari-Ruth Oda and Paul Philp.
