It is a recurring theme among the smaller and independent weavers - the juxtaposing of quiet village roads with the signature hum of a few power looms reverberating from hundred year old buildings. On this occasion, located outside the town of Echizen in Fukui Prefecture - a look into the world of dobby looms at the velvet specialists, Yamazaki Vellodo.

Founded in the early 1960's and now in its third generation of leadership, the mill is operated by Yuzo Yamashita, his son Naomichi and his wife. They continue to push the limits of velvet weaving, testing new fiber combinations and weave structures in an ongoing balance of mastered classics and innovative interpretations.
